Year 2 Class newsletter Autumn Terms 2020
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to Year 2 and to inform you of what we will be doing in our class during the Autumn Term as well as some general information about Class 2. From this term, I will be teaching 4 days, Mrs. Licata will be teaching Year 2 on a Thursday morning and all day Friday. We are both excited about working together as a team to support the children’s transition back to school and to ensure that they continue to progress in their education.
Our topic for Autumn Term is ‘Blast Off’, a topic based on achievements in space and space exploration. In history, the children will focus on past events such as the first moon landing and the development of space exploration. They will explore significant events beyond living memory, such as significant inventions and the first flight. Children will also be learning about the lives of significant individuals who have contributed to national and international achievements, such as Neil Armstrong, Christina Koch, Jessica Meir and Mae Jemison. In Geography, children will be developing their enquiry skills by looking closely at their own locality and that of a contrasting locality. They will use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and its countries, as well as the countries, continents and oceans studied at this key stage.
In Science children will be covering units that give them experience of materials, forces, light and sound. Experimental and investigative work focuses on thinking about what is expected to happen, making measurements, recording and presenting results as well as deciding whether the results support the prediction and deciding whether comparisons are fair.
Literacy and numeracy will be taught in the morning. PE will take place on Monday afternoon and Thursday morning. Please ensure that on those days your child comes dressed ready for the PE session. We will be doing PE outside in our designated area so appropriate footwear is essential.
Homework can be found on Google Classroom and will range between literacy, numeracy, science and topic, it will be given out on a Thursday and will usually be due in the following Wednesday. Homework should take about 30 minutes to complete depending on the task. Your child will read in guided reading groups in class and 1-1 with an adult during the week. Please bring your child’s books in on a Monday, they will be changed and the ones brought back, quarantined for others to use the following week. It would also be beneficial to your child if they read at home as often as possible.
Water: please provide your child with a named water-bottle. These should be taken home regularly to ensure they remain clean.
Snacks: Children are able to bring a healthy snack to have during morning break (no crisps, chocolate or sweets please), snacks can be kept in their draw.
Mrs. Whiting & Mrs. Licata
Children in every year group are given four weeks during the Autumn term to produce a project linked to their class topic. Usually, children set up their projects in class and the whole school visit each others classrooms to look at what has been produced and to celebrate everyone's achievement. Unfortunately, we were not able to do that this year, however, children were still able to bring their projects in to show their class and to talk about what they made. The children worked so hard and produced work that they should all be really proud of.
Here are just a few examples of the wonderful work produced by Class 2.
