Welcome to Year 6
The teaching staff for this academic year are Mrs Bethel and Mrs Willis. Mrs Buck and Mrs Fink are also part of our teaching team and will be working in our classroom.
Year 6 is a very important year, helping our pupils prepare for their move to secondary school. As the oldest children, there is an expectation that they will set the example to the rest of the school, in terms of their behaviour and attitude towards school life.
During Year 6 we will focus on exposing our children to a variety of different text types and equipping them with the skills necessary to be able to write their own versions of these independently. The children will be inspired through a range of stimuli and supplemented with discrete spelling, grammar and punctuation activities to support their progression in each area of writing. They will also undertake plenty of opportunities to help develop reading comprehension skills such as unpicking vocabulary, making inferences and predictions, explaining reasons fully using evidence, retrieving information and summarising.
With the Maths content in Year 6 it is even more important that your child’s times tables and related division facts are secure. Fluency in applying times tables facts and having an efficient written method for the four operations will underpin many other areas that we will teach this year.
Our Curriculum For Year 6
We follow the National Curriculum at the West Oxford Community Primary School. Our team in the classroom works hard to make sure that every child is nurtured and supported as we work together to achieve the milestones set down by the government, creatively and effectively.
The subjects that we cover include: English, mathematics, science, art and design, citizenship, computing, design and technology, geography, history, languages (Italian), music and physical education.
